The American journalism industry has been in a state of economic crisis these last few years. Between 2008-09, newspaper circulation decreased by more than 10 percent. The industry sold about 44 million copies a day--fewer than at any time since the 1940s. Circulation at the San Francisco Chronicle shrunk by 25 percent on weekdays, to about 252,000--less than half what it was six years earlier.
